Join us at the 15th Panel Discussion on Wednesday, 5th Feb 2020 from 3:30 PM onwards to discuss every possible socio-legal issues involved with CITIZENSHIP (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2019.

Brief Background:

The Parliament passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Dec 2019 which received Presidential assent on Thursday, 12th Dec 2019.

The Act seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan if they faced religious persecution there. The act seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955, in order to grant Indian nationality to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians who come to India after facing religious persecution in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Over the past month, a large section of people including students from different universities, civil societies, and other organizations from across the nation have been steadfastly opposing the act, claiming that citizenship can't be given on the basis of religion and thus it violets the basic structure.
