The Anglo-Indian Suburban Front has put forward a request before the Tamil Nadu State Assembly to pass a resolution which urges the Central Government to restore the special reservation under Article 331 of the Constitution for the nomination of Anglo-Indians to the State Legislature and Parliament which was amended in the Constitutional Amendment Act, 2020. The Constitutional Amendment Act, 2020 did away with the reservation given to the Anglo-Indian members in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies. The term, Anglo-Indian community, can be traced back to the official policy of the East India Company which further appeared in the Government of India Act, 1935. Under the Constitution of India, Article 334 lays down the provisions for reserving seats for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and the nomination of Anglo-Indians. However, after the 2011 census, the number of people identified as Anglo-Indians was 296 which led to the discontinuation of reservation of Anglo-Indians.Under Article 331 of the Constitution, provisions for the reservation of two Anglo-Indians to the Lok Sabha were provided which stated that they will be nominated by the President. It was also urged that the 2002 Special Leave Petition filed before the Supreme Court be vacated and restoration of reservation of a seat for Anglo-Indians in professional courses should be done. The association also contends that there must be a mandatory post of an inspector of Anglo-Indians Schools and that 100 jobs should be provided to the community over the span of the next five years while giving priority to those who have no breadwinners in the family.
