Supreme Court panel submits its report on farm laws.

Updated: Mar 22

The Supreme Court in January 2021 suspended the implementation of three farm laws and constituted a 4 members committee which comprised of Ashok Gulati, Dr Pramod Kumar Joshi, Anil Ghanwat, and B.S. Mann (who later recused himself from the committee).

Farm Bills in question are:

  1. Farmers (Empowerment & Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance & Farm Services Act 2020.

  2. Farmers Produce Trade & Commerce (Promotion & Facilitation) Act, 2020.

  3. Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

The expert panel was formed to listen to the grievances of the farmers on the farm laws and the views of the government and make recommendations. The agitated farmers despite having several rounds of discussions with the government were not ready to accept anything less than withdrawal of the first two acts and withdrawal of the amendment made in the last act. The three-member committee continued to meet to find a solution to the deadlock and submitted its report to the apex court in a sealed cover on 19th March. As per the committee website it held total 12 rounds of consultation with various stakeholders, including Farmers' Union, farmer producers organization, government official, state governments, professionals, and academicians among others. The committee members also held around 9 internal meetings before submitting the report. Now, with the hearing scheduled on 5th April, it may lead to an amicable solution between the government and farmers.
